What is the difference between mental fitness coaching and counseling/therapy?

Mental fitness coaching is action-oriented and focused on skill building to improve performance. The timeframe for coaching is typically short-term after goals are achieved.

Counseling/therapy delves into the past and requires people being diagnosed and treated for a specific mental health condition. A counseling/therapy relationship is typically longer-term, so people are able to work through wounds or trauma so they can heal from their past.

To paint a picture of the contrast, imagine someone falling into a dirt hole and being unable to pull themselves out alone. A counselor/therapist helps the person climb out of the hole so they can return to prior levels of functioning.

In comparison, picture someone who wants to improve their skills in mountain climbing. A coach share tips, tools, and techniques that helps the person advance their skills and climb better and higher than they could before.

Can I work with you as my mental fitness coach and as my mental health counselor, too?

No. I am a licensed professional clinical counselor, and it would be unethical for me to work with you as a mental fitness coach and as a counselor.

If in the course of our coaching work together, we agree that you would benefit from counseling/therapy, we would take one of two paths, depending on your needs. We would stop doing coaching until you finish your counseling work, or continue doing coaching while you are in counseling.

Whichever path is best for you, I would not "put on my counselor hat," in our work together. If you are local to Ohio, I'd be happy to refer you to skilled therapists that I know. And if you live outside Ohio, I would give you tips on how to search for a counselor who might be a good fit for you.

Can I use my insurance to cover mental fitness coaching?

No, I am working with you as a mental fitness coach. Mental health coverage requires the diagnosis of a mental health disorder in order to help pay for services. Such a diagnosis is only made during mental health counseling/therapy.

Mental fitness coaching is an out-of-pocket investment in your mental performance, much like hiring a personal trainer or executive coach.

Can I pay for coaching with my HSA or Flex Spending card?

No, to be eligible for reimbursement coaching would need to be deemed medically necessary and prescribed by a doctor as part of a treatment plan.

Insurances cover treatment deemed medically necessary, which generally requires the diagnosis of a mental health disorder given during counseling/therapy.

Coaching is not listed in IRS Publication 502 as an eligible medical expense.

When can I expect to see improvement in my skills from working together?

I aim to deliver value to clients every time we connect. You will have the opportunity to acquire skills that will improve your mental fitness whenever we meet.

Most clients report noticeable progress in mental fitness skills and stress resilience within 4 meetings. Results vary by individual.

How long am I committing to work with you? For years?

While many coaches seek to sign clients to long-term contracts, I renew with individual clients on a month-to-month basis. There is no long-term commitment. You get to make progress on your mental fitness goals without the stress of a long-term financial contract.
